Merryn Dexter Shares Her #FavoriteThings about the #BlackHillsWolves

Hi Everyone! Merryn here, and don't worry about the title of this post, I promise I won't be singing. Given that my DH has claimed my singing voice should be banned under the Geneva Convention as a form of cruel and unusual punishment - that is a very good thing!

I first became involved with the Black Hills Wolves series as an avid reader and I am going to lay claim to the position of #1 fan (I know there is a lot of competition for this position!). I am also going to be a part of the series as a writer, so I thought I would share some of the things I love about the Tao Pack.

1. Drew, Ryker and Gee  - I know, I know, this is a pretty obvious one but without these three pivotal and very different characters, the series just wouldn't be the same. There are so many stories out there with a strong Alpha, completely in control of his destiny. Drew's struggle to claim his heritage and rebuild his pack from the ashes is, for me, a refreshing change. Ryker is another complex character and his long journey from Boogeyman to redeemed hero is one that I think every reader is going to fall in love with. And finally Gee. The lone bear in a pack of wolves. Keeper of the Pack History and holder of so many secrets. I think we've only just begun to scratch the surface with him and the more glimpses I have, the more I am intrigued by his big heart.

2. The different kinds of hero - Whatever your taste in heroes, BHW has what you are looking for. We have bad boys who achieve their true potential once they find their mates - Colt, Ravage, Kennedy, Roark, I'm looking at you fellas! We have the strong silent types with very different reasons for keeping their own secrets - Ogden, Z, Ryker. We have good guys who know what's right and just need to persuade their mates to fall in line with the plan - Marcus, Bastian, Jace, even Drew. I'm also going to place the forthcoming hero of my book (A Mate's Healing TouchCaleb in this category - I think you will find him very persuasive!

3. Let's hear it for the Omegas - Although I love kick-ass Alpha males and beautiful, strong-willed Beta females, I'm thrilled that the series focuses on gentle-natured characters too. There is strength in submission, in trusting your mate to give you what you need. Patch is a true Sub, finding her perfect Dom in a human. Sweet Tasha who tames Colt and gives him the strength to embrace his future. Paul the barman who steals everyone's heart and who I hope will get his own HEA sooner rather than later. Kole who finds true fulfilment with two mates - a human and a wolf.

4. Los Lobos - A remote town deep in the Black Hills of South Dakota, following the gradual revival of this broken-down community is as much of a pleasure for me as seeing each couple (or triad) fight for and win their HEAs. Each new development adds a layer to the overall story, a new environment to explore, another setting to picture my favorite characters. Gee's Bar - The Den, small businesses like the B&B, the Bookshop and Ogden's Lumber Yard. The Schoolhouse, the Barn. The locations are so well realized that I can picture myself walking down the streets and running through the wild untamed hills as part of the pack.

5. The Authors - A shared world is a fantastic way to be introduced to new authors. Maintaining consistency throughout the series whilst allowing each person their own unique voice must be akin to wrangling a group of over-excited teenage girls at a One Direction gig. I say this from experience (although given our ages, you probably need a time machine and a Duran Duran gig for accuracy). With infinite patience and the odd well-placed kick in the pants, the creative team behind the series keep us in line and still manage to provide the creative freedom we crave. As a reader, I see it too. Each writer weaves their own thread into the tapestry of the Black Hills Wolves series and together I think we are creating something unique and beautiful

If you'd like to explore more about the characters I have mentioned, you can follow this link to our series list and reading order which details the couple featured in each book.

Happy Reading!

Under a Mating Moon Release Day! #BlackHillsWolves #BlogHunt #Giveaway #Interview

Hello Dear Readers!

I’m happy to be here on the blog today to celebrate the release of my second Black Hills Wolves story, Under A Mating Moon!  ::happy dance:: The story’s hero, Jake Marsden, tagged along with me today to answer a few questions. Such a nice guy… Enjoy!

Celia:  Hi Jake! Happy Book Birthday to you! Please tell our visitors a bit about yourself: age, occupation, place of birth, where you live now, etc.

Jake:  Thank you, Celia. Hello everyone, I’m Jacob “Jake” Marsden, 22 years old, musician. I was born in Bath, England. My family relocated to Indiana where I was raised until I was fourteen.  Then we moved to Coventry, England, where my father is the Alpha of the local pack. I have an apartment in London, but I’m currently on tour in the US so I suppose you could say I’m living on the road…and, as you know, Celia, I’ve stopped in Los Lobos for a brief break.

Celia: Can you describe yourself in three words?

Jake:  Creative, driven, loyal

Celia:  That’s good but you forgot pierced, tattooed, and seriously sexy.

Jake:  That’s more than three words, Celia. But, thank you.

Celia:  My pleasure. Really.  Last question… What frustrates you, and what makes you happy?

Jake:  Not a what, but rather, a who… Lexi. Always Lexi. That woman… ::shakes his head::  I owe my worst and best life moments to her, since she-- ::shoots a crooked grin::  well, let’s leave it at that for now.  No story spoilers, right Celia?

Celia:  Indeed. Thanks for hanging with us Jake!  Dear readers, I hope you enjoyed meeting Jake.  If you have any questions for Jake, be sure to leave us a comment.

One lucky commentator will win a copy of Wolf on a Leash by Virginia Nelson and Seducing the Schoolmarm by Mahalia Levey.  Don't forget to check out Virginia Cavanaugh's blog for more blog hunt goodness!

Under A Mating Moon
Black Hills Wolves, Book 27
By Celia Breslin

British Alpha wolf Jake Marsden spends his days among humans, pursuing a lucrative music career and avoiding his pack’s politics. When his current DJ tour takes him to the US, he stops in Los Lobos to visit family, and runs into the one Wolf he never wants to see again—the mate who rejected his claim.

While visiting her brother in Los Lobos, free-spirited Lexi Luparell is shocked to encounter the Wolf she’d denied when they were teens. Now she must face her guilt for the cruel way she spurned him all those years ago, make amends, and admit the truth. Jake was right all along—they’re meant to mate.

Lexi would love to explore the mate concept and her overwhelming attraction to virile, alpha Wolf Jake, but he wants nothing to do with her. How can she break down his defenses when she’s the reason he built them in the first place?

Jake dates only human women now. Lexi had her shot at being his mate, and she threw it away. But when her life is threatened, he may have to rethink his position and do whatever it takes to claim his one true mate.

Persistence Pays Off @MelissaLimoges @DecadentPub #BHW

So I was thinking the other day…. What is it about shifters that romance readers love so much?
....From Alphas with hearts of gold to the Big Bad Wolf types, the quintessential shifter appears often in romantic fiction. And I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy them in my romance novels.
....Personally, I think it has to do with the unpredictability of a shifter’s character. I’m sure you know the sort I’m talking about. One moment, he’s growly and brooding. The next, he’s possessive to the extreme and would rip off anyone’s head who threatens his heroine. Another aspect that hooks me in shifter romances is the chase. How can you not fall a bit in fictional love with a persistent hero who is determined to snag his mate by any means possible?
....I suppose that describes my hero, Stephen, in Taming his Mate best. He stuck with his heroine, Kate, for years, trying to win her over, and refused to give up on her. I find it a bit endearing when a hero knows precisely what, or in this case, who he wants and doesn’t give up until he succeeds.

Taming His Mate
Black Hills Wolves Book 8
M. Limoges

....It’s a good thing Stephen Dorsett is a patient Wolf—especially since his stubborn mate refuses to accept the bond between them. Though she’s run from him for years, he’s determined to show her she belongs at his side. Nothing will stand between him and his sexy, spitfire she-Wolf.
....Kate Matthews lives with a horrible secret. And though she’s loved Stephen for as long as she can remember, she could never be the mate he wants or deserves—especially if he ever learned the truth about her.
....When hunters threaten the safety of the Black Hill’s Wolves pack, Kate overcomes her fears and lays her life on the line. Will Stephen and the rest of the pack accept her once her life-long plight is at last revealed?

Excerpt:
....A high-pitched howl reached through the barrier of sleep and tugged Kate Matthews into semi-consciousness. Rolling onto her side, she groaned and smothered her head beneath her pillow. Another bay penetrated the memory-foam fabric jammed over her ears. Throwing the cushion on the other side of the bed, she flopped on her back and stared at the ceiling fan as yet another howl shattered the last vestige of sleep.
....Damn it, Stephen.
....Kate flung the covers off her legs, jumped from the bed, and stomped across the chilly hardwood floor to her bedroom window. Squinting in the darkness, she spotted one of her tennis shoes beside her foot and grabbed it. Armed, she jerked the window open and hurled her makeshift missile at the large, gray wolf loitering on her back lawn. The beast swerved clear of the canvas bomb at the last second.
....An iridescent pop of light gave way to the human form of Stephen Dorsett. As moonlight illuminated his nude body, he gazed up at her, wearing an amused expression that pissed her off and turned her on at the same time.
....“And a good morning to you, Sunshine.” His voice oozed with syrupy sweetness, infuriating her more.

Portrait of a Lone Wolf @DecadentPub #BHW

....My name is Katalina Leon. Writing paranormal romance with wolf-shifters is my current obsession. I’ve got wolves on he brain. My contribution to the Black Hills Wolves series is “Portrait of a Lone Wolf” It’s book 7 in Decadent Publishing’s multi-author series. I’m happy to announce, I have a second book coming soon. I can’t wait to share it.
....I joined the Black Hills Wolves because Rebecca Royce invited me to. I love Rebecca. She’s someone I’d described as talented, generous and creative. I’ve worked with her on other book series and she is a high-integrity person. She’s an author to keep your eye on, and she’s here to stay. I can’t believe how much she accomplishes as an author on top of being a full time mother to three young boys. I have one boy, and I get exhausted just thinking about all she juggles.
....The Black Hills Wolves project has been in the works for two years. I signed on in March 2013. “Portrait of a Lone Wolf” is my first book in the series and my first contracted book with Decadent Publishing. The story introduces two lonely characters, Sela and Rio, who haven’t belonged to anyone or anything for a long while. Despite a rough start, they soon discover they make sense as life-mates. My heroine Sela Lopez, is a divorced, filmmaker. She arrives in the Black Hills intent on producing a documentary of the Black Hills beleaguered wolf population and gets a big surprise. The wolves of the Black Hills are more than they appear to be.

....My hero Rio Waya—“Waya” is Cherokee for wolf, is a retired Army Ranger. He’s spent his adult life on the move, and in deliberate avoidance of Black Hills wolf-pack dysfunction. At one time, an Alpha-tyrant named Magnum, did a generation of damage to the pack. With Magnum out of way, pack members in my books return to the Black Hills and begin to explore what life in a wolf-shifter community has to offer. Of course he’s tired of being a lone wolf and is ready to take a life-mate when unsuspecting Sela rolls into town…

Portrait of a Lone Wolf
Black Hills Wolves Book 7

....A mixed-blood Native American wolf-shifter, abandoned by a teenage mother and ignored by an absentee father, Rio Waya has never fit in or felt worthy of love. But when he comes home to the Black Hills, he realizes he wants a mate of his own.
....Recovering from a cheating ex who started a new family behind her back, Sela López seeks escape to pull her life back together. As a documentary filmmaker and wildlife photographer, she rents a cabin in the Black Hills with plans to film the beleaguered wolf population. But she’s so busy looking through a camera lens she doesn’t see trouble coming.
....Sparks fly as mutual fears and vulnerabilities surface when Sela and Rio meet. She can’t figure out why the mysterious Mr. Waya is so anxious about having a documentary made of the Black Hills Wolves. But when his secret is exposed, all hell breaks loose. Can Rio win Sela’s trust and soothe her fears about allowing a hunky wolf-shifter into her heart?

EXCERPT:
....Following her nose through the front door, she was thrust into a honky-tonk time warp. Bars like this one didn’t exist in Los Angeles. The Den was cozy enough but appeared to have been decorated by a taxidermist in the late seventies and zealously preserved since. The shaggy heads of several unfortunate buffalo dominated the far wall. At the front door, two stuffed raccoons offered a mock greeting with outstretched paws. The chairs, booths, and even a few of the tables were covered in forest green vinyl. No doubt a sticky misery to come in contact with on a hot day.
....Movement caught her eye. A burly man with an inscrutable expression rose from behind a counter as if he was part of a magic act. He was tall with a barrel chest. A nappy brown sweater coupled with hunched posture lent him a distinctly bearlike appearance.
....The dour gentleman focused on Sela with a frown. “Where did you come from?”
....Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild” was cranked to eleven. She had to shout to be heard, “Can I order some food to go?”
....The saggy-faced Papa bear behind the counter appeared perturbed. “Fair warning, miss. The kitchen’s closed. Pretty sure we don’t have what you want.”
....The explosive clack of a pool cue making hard contact with a ball nearly drowned her out. “Except for you, everything’s closed in this town!”
....A few customers cast her a brief glance then looked away. The lucky bastards sat in front of pitchers of cold beer, towering hamburgers, paired with heaps of french fries or onion rings. Her stomach growled embarrassingly loud, but she doubted anyone could hear above the blaring music. “Something smells heavenly. Could I at least order onion rings to go?”
....Bear man shook his head. “Sorry. No can do. Fryer’s turned off.”
....“Really?” Digging through her purse, she wondered if this place would accept a credit card. “I’m willing to pay a little extra for the trouble.”
....With a sullen pout, he rubbed a limp rag across the countertop. “After hours The Den ain’t open to the general public. Guess what? It’s after hours.”
....“Oh, come on!” She sounded desperate.
....A man in a red plaid shirt, who appeared to be in his mid-thirties, sat at the counter. He shot her a smoldering look filled with mixed emotions. Perhaps he was angry or lost in thought. She couldn’t tell. The flash of fire in his eyes beneath brooding black brows was impossible to decipher. When he opened his mouth, the tough gravel voice of a drill sergeant rumbled out. “Gee, don’t be a hard ass. Get the lady some onion rings.”
....The lumbering hairy thing behind the counter, presumably named Gee, thrust out his bottom lip and lifted his hands into the air in mock surrender. “Why not? It’s not like my house rules ever get any respect anyway.”
....From the corner of her eye, Sela glimpsed a huge silver-furred canine dart from under a table, push a swinging door open with its muzzle, and disappear.
....“Did I just see a wolf?” Sela gasped.

Interview with a Mate #BHW @Decadentpub

Hi, all. I’m Summer McCoy. I’m part skinwalker and half  feline shifter. I was born into the Goldspark big cat clan, rivals of the Black Hills Wolves. I most often take the form of a raven, though, due to a little mishap in my youth, which is how I met Brick Northridge, the great love of my life.
I’m so excited to be here today to tell you about WOLF’S SONG, Brick’s and my love story. It was a little weird at first, you know, seeing some of our intimate smexy interludes in actual black and white. But as long as we’re together, the two of us can withstand anything: evil alphas, rival clan wars, embarrassment, you name it. Actually, we’re not together today – the first time we’re not, really, since we met.
Brick’s over at the Daily Dose of Decadence blog, even as we speak. And don’t think I’m not a little worried about that.

BHWB: Why would you be worried about that, Summer?

Summer: Well, sometimes Brick needs me to keep him together.

BHWB: Why?

Summer: When he’s around other wolves, he can hear their voices in his head and sometimes see visions of their deaths. But I sing to him and it seems to block out all the other noise. Keeps him calm and mellow.  And hot and hunky.  So we can concentrate on the sexy!

BHWB: Is there anything you wouldn’t do for him?

Summer: Nothing! My Uncle Cal tried to tear us apart once. I won’t tell you the horrible sacrifice I almost made…Instead, I accidentally shifted shot him full of animal tranquilizer!

BHWB: Hmmm. I don’t suppose you’d care to elaborate?

Summer: Not without giving too much away!

BHWB: Would you talk about the “mishap” you had that caused you to take the raven form?

Summer: Suffice it to say that I was up a tree as a kit, fell out of it, shifted, and landed naked in front of half the cats. When I met Brick I was living in a tree.

BHWB: That’s somewhat ironic, don’t you think?

Summer shrugs and grins: When my big handsome hunk goes all wolfy and wants to race under the moon…I want to soar with him. And the heights are magical!

BHWB: Can you tell us a little more of your story?

Summer: Well, I’d rather you read it! But sure:

Wolf's Song
Black Hills Wolves - Book 4
Taryn Kincaid

BLURB:
....Ten years ago, visions of death and the babble of lupine voices in his head, drove lone wolf Brick Northridge to challenge his cruel and greedy pack alpha. Beaten by the alpha’s thugs and banished from the pack, Brick lives a life of seclusion in a mountain cabin in the Black Hills.
....Born into a rival clan of feline shifters, skinwalker Summer McCoy, in her guise as a raven, watches Brick from afar, giving him back a reason to live through her sweet songs and special gifts.
....But when her clan attempts to tear them apart and threatens the pack that banished Brick so many years before, will their love be strong enough to withstand the forces bent on their destruction?

EXCERPT:
Summer McCoy perched in the uppermost branches of her special Ponderosa pine, in raven guise, engaging in her favorite pastime, spying on the lone wolf chopping wood below. Two days’ worth of whiskers shadowed his rigid jaw. She loved when he forgot—or didn’t bother—to shave. Scruffy stubble suited him.
The sun beat down on the back of his bronzed neck and shone on his hair, the color of roasted coffee, a shade lighter than the dark shadow that charcoaled his face.
... She fluffed her feathers in anticipation. Take your shirt off, Brick. She’d heard the giant werebear, Gee, call him that name a decade ago. He’d made some joke about a wall and the hardness of the male’s head. But Brick hadn’t laughed back then. Not ever.
....He’d fascinated her from the moment he’d arrived in the glade, bruised and battered. Once she’d learned his name, she’d treasured it, taking pleasure from repeating it often. Secretly, of course. Unwrapping the syllable frequently to admire its radiance in the privacy of her tree house, the way a woman wearing pearls against her warm skin enhanced their luminosity and iridescence.
....Now, as if he’d heard her silent urging, he complied with her plea, shrugging out of the plaid flannel and flinging it onto a tree stump. Her beak opened as she sucked in breath. Sweat glistened on his torso, glazing rippling pecs and abs, shoulders broad enough to span the Badlands. A huge, incredible specimen of masculinity. Thick biceps flexed as he wielded the ax. Her heart beat faster than a hummingbird’s wings. Heat licked her.

Heather Long Talks About The Zen of Writing the Enforcer @DecadentPub #BHW

At the Menger Hotel, in February of 2013, Rebecca Royce and I talked wolves for hours. Key to our discussion was the potential of the Black Hills pack. Her idea was to create a shared world other authors could play in—a pack with hundreds of wolves, hundreds of stories, and hundreds of ways to interact. My job was to play devil’s advocate. I broached all the ways it could go wrong and asked what did we need to know? What should we lay the groundwork? How did we anticipate what could go wrong?

Funnily enough, Becca knew the direction she wanted to go. With her character, Drew, as Alpha she could be the driving force, but how did we stay on course? We needed an Enforcer, someone who took care of the little things and didn’t allow for deviations. Thus, Ryker was born.

Writing an Enforcer proved to be a challenge, because this is a man who does not get close to people. He cares, sometimes too deeply, but he avoids those personal relationships. Ryker is older than Drew—an adult when Drew was born and already his father’s Enforcer. Magnum was not always crazy, but he was always brutal. His blood oath to Magnum leashed Ryker’s ability to destroy the alpha when his descent into madness tortured the pack.

Protecting his pack is primary in Ryker’s heart. He found ways to circumvent his alpha’s commands—obeying the specific letter of the orders rather than doing what Magnum wanted. The madder Magnum became, the more Ryker withdrew. Bringing Drew home did more than end Magnum’s reign, it also freed Ryker.

The wolf still wants to protect the pack, but remains isolated from them. What a wolf wants, however, is connection, so when he discovers the woman who can be his mate—his world changes.

There’s something calming about writing a wolf so clear in who he is—discover what Ryker wants today.

What a Wolf Wants
Black Hills Wolves Book 2
Heather Long
He runs alone...
....Ryker Grey is used to being on the outside looking in. For more than fifty years, he has worked as Pack Enforcer for the Black Hills Wolves, rising to his rank swiftly. Compelled by duty and devotion to his people, he fought to keep them protected from within and without—earning a few enemies and fewer friends. Drew’s return has sparked healing in the fraying pack, but Ryker remains vigilant.

She needs a place to call her own...
....Saja Lyons has spent her life studying cultures, but never really being a part of them. Completing a double specialty in psychology and sociology, she decides to take the three months after her graduation to find herself on a cross-country drive. She embraces the nomadic road trip until her car breaks down on a deserted stretch of road in the middle of nowhere South Dakota.

Two lonely lives collide in the cold...
....Ryker catches Saja’s scent from a mile away, loneliness edged in fear, frustration, and utter femininity. He approaches her in order to lend her a hand and get her out of the pack’s way...the sooner she’s gone from Los Lobos, the safer the pack will be. When their gazes meet, her playful hostility arouses the hunter in him, and for the first time in fifty years, the enforcer tastes what it’s like to not be alone...
....But what if the best thing that ever happened to him is a danger to the Black Hills Wolves?

EXCERPT
....As his senses had promised, snow fell steadily, sticking to the frozen ground without struggle. Picking up his pace, Ryker jogged toward the road, following the direction he’d last heard the engine. Covering the distance at a brisk pace, he barely noticed the strain. While he’d rather be on four feet than two, this was at least a run through the snow.
....Metal slammed against metal ahead of him.
....“Now. You’ll work….” Low and husky, the feminine voice added a lilt of conjuring to her statement. Keys rattled. Clicking snapped in the intervening silence. “Son of a futher mucker.” Flesh slapped a surface. A door slammed. “Cold. Cold. Cold. Cold. Cold.”
....More metal banging off metal.
....“Work you piece of crap. I just spent my last five hundred dollars on you. Work.” Bang. Slam. Bang.
....Slowing as the woods gave way to a long stretch of field ending at the blacktopped old highway, he studied the vehicle parked askew on the side of the road. Askew was a generous description. The four-door sedan sat at a nearly ninety-degree angle to the road with the back tires parked in grass.
....“Okay. So, count to ten,” the feminine voice continued. The sound of her shoes slapping the pavement came in time to the numbers. When she reached ten, metal crashed against metal, the clang loud and sharp enough to hurt his ears. “Work!”
....A slender figure popped out from behind the raised hood to dart to the driver’s side door. He paused mid-step as she squinted her eyes closed then whispered, “You will work. You will work. You will work.”
....With a twist of the key, the only thing he heard working was some rapid-fire clicks of the ignition switch trying to fire. Then, even that ceased when what remained of her power leached away.
....“Fuck. Fuck. Fuckity fuck.” The woman flung back against the seat, bashing her closed fists on the steering wheel. “‘Woman dies in freak snowstorm perfectly preserving her remains’ should make a sharable story on Huffington Post sometime next spring.” Even with the defeatist words, the fight in her tone continued to boil.
....Fascinated, despite himself, he watched as she tapped her head against the back of the seat then bounced out of the car in a surge of energy. She raced around the vehicle, jerked the trunk open, and began to rummage through….
....A wild assortment of scents raced across his nose—older scents, sweat, metal, books, chalk, dust, burned paper, sulfur—underscoring it all was a distinctly feminine musk, exotic and heady, but not too sweet. It carried more of a bite, one not altogether unpleasant. His distracted quarry whirled to face his direction, a small black gun braced in both of her hands.
....Good. She wasn’t utterly defenseless. He approved.
....“You shouldn’t sneak up on people on the side of the road,” she called out in lieu of a greeting. Nothing in her stance betrayed the chill overtaking her fragile form, but a blue tinge touched the edges of her lips, while her face was a shade too pale. She clenched her jaw to keep her teeth from chattering. “Who are you?”
....If she were a Wolf, she would have snapped at him.
